Cyclist Nigel Ellsay (Courtenay) won Team BC’s first Gold medal of week two, winning the time trial in 25.49.3.
Though claiming it was a tough course, Ellsay felt good about his race.
Ellsay takes part in the 100km road race tomorrow (Friday) alongside teammate Adam de Vos (Victoria) who won the Bronze medal in the time trial in 27.04.5.
Men’s and women’s golf had a practice round on The Dunes on opening day and head coach Jody Jackson (Victoria) is pretty confident the team will perform well.
“We had the team up for a training camp here earlier in the year so the team knows the course,” said Jackson.
The golf team features Kevin Kwon (Pitt Meadows) who shot a final round 3-under par 69 to capture both the junior and juvenile division titles at the 2011 Canadian junior boys championship at Morgan Creek Golf Course in South Surrey, BC.
Kwon had a four-day tally of 16-under 272, good for an 11-stroke victory in the junior division and an 18-stroke win in the juvenile division.
The women’s volleyball team got the butterflies out as they played the Northwest Territories winning 25-6 25-10 25-8.
Head coach Daniel Huzar (North Vancouver) felt it was good to get that first game out of the way.
“They’ (NWT) are a very scrappy team that dug quite a few balls which made our attackers have to adjust,” said Huzar. “But it was nice to get that first match out of the way. We had excited nerves but we were able to maintain our focus.”
“I look at this game as our team bonding game,” said volleyball player Tyger Holt (Victoria). “We are all united as one. It was good to get a chance to play in this atmosphere.”
