Everyone, well almost everyone in the lower mainland love to be entertained by the Canada’s Women’s National Team and now we hear they are returning.
They will play against Mexico in an international friendly in Vancouver February 4th at BC Place for the first time since capturing Bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The match itself will be a homecoming for Canada’s soccer heroes, after becoming the first team in over a hundred years to repeat a podium finish at a summer Olympics. Having won all but one of its games at the Rio Olympics, Canada has rose in international rankings to fourth overall in the world.
Captain Christine Sinclair stated “Playing at home is incredibly important to us and we are looking forward to sharing this moment with our family – our fans – who have been with us all along this journey.”
She continued “Bringing home this Bronze Medal and sharing it with the people who believed in us and helped us believe in ourselves means a lot.”
Sinclair, who netted the Bronze Medal winning goal in her 250th international appearance at the Rio Olympics, made the announcement with Canada Soccer General Secretary Peter Montopoli and Head Coach John Herdman.
Montopoli told the media “This team is like a family and this match will be about welcoming them home and celebrating a really massive achievement.”
He continued “We will be honouring the members of our bronze medal team, but also all the players and staff who have worked tirelessly for our women’s program over the years. This is really a family, together with our dedicated fans, and we wanted to come back to Vancouver and honour that wonderful bond.”
February’s match will be Canada’s Women’s National Team’s first time back at BC Place since placing sixth at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.
