Indo Pacific Trampoline & Tumbling Championships
Canada’s next generation of trampoline athletes has racked up 13 medals so far, including 6 gold medals at the Indo Pacific Championships; with more for grabs on the final day of competition.
Toronto’s up and coming rising star Keevin Madigan focused on consistency through the prelims as well as in the final to win Canada’s only individual trampoline medal in the men’s 15-16 age group.
This following three full days of competition with an extremely heavy schedule.
The 2012 Canadian junior champion; Madigan scored 144.900 points to place first in a field of 20 competitors.
All came from various countries which included Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Vancouver’s Cam Quinland was the only other Canadian in the competition and placed 8th overall.
“It’s a great competition and a lot of fun,” said Madigan, who is aiming for a spot at the Youth Olympics in 2014.
“I’ve had to learn to focus and stay relaxed when I compete because I was too intense before,” said Madigan, who also is tied for the lead with teammate Kyle Carragher of Vancouver in double mini trampoline heading into the final.
Along with the world age group championships last year in Birmingham, England and the Nissan Cup last June in Switzerland, Madigan rates the Indo Pacific Championships as biggest international events he has competed in.
The championships are held every two years attracting athletes from non-European countries in various age classes.
Most of Canada’s medals at this year’s event have come in the double mini competition with three gold, three silver and two bronze.
Winning double mini gold were Vancouver’s Duncan Blais in the men’s 11-12 age group, Danielle Gruber in the women’s 13-14 class, and Regina’s Dennis Oppenlander in the men’s 17 and over division.
Other double mini medal winners in various age groups were Kelowna’s Emma Tucker (silver, 13-14 women), Calgary’s Caitlin Brown (silver, 17 and over women), Toronto’s Jordyn Miller-Burko (senior women), Calgary’s Connor Richardson (bronze, men’s 17 and over), and Vancouver’s Poppy Quinlan’ bronze, women’s 17 and over).
The tumbling events saw Carragher and Jared Khalifa finishing 1-2 in the men’s 15-16 age group, Vancouver’s Tamara O’Brien won Gold in the women’s 15-16 division and Regina’s Erin Templeton earn a Silver in the women’s 17 and over event.
