It took awhile, but the Calgary Hitmen nailed down the individual who they think believe can lead the team to the WHL final in hopes of reaching the pinnacle of  success – the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

He (Steve Hamilton) is named as the 10th head coach in the history of the franchise that saw him sign to a multi-year deal.

His resume includes helping guide the Edmonton Oil Kings as an Associate Coach to three (3) straight WHL Finals, which also include two (2) league championships (2012 and 2014) ending with a 2014 Memorial Cup.

He has eight (8) seasons of Western Hockey League experience including the last four as the head coach of the Oil Kings.

He also served as a Head Coach and Assistant with Hockey Canada with the U17’s and U18’s in 2013, 2014 and again in 2017.

He mentioned to the media “My family and I are extremely excited about the move to Calgary and the Hitmen have a tremendous organization with a great tradition of developing players and building talented, dynamic teams. I look forward to working with the existing coaching staff and the group of players we have assembled.”

He is a three-time AJHL Coach of the Year with the Fort Saskatchewan Traders (2006) and Spruce Grove Saints in 2009 and 2010.

He spent 13 years as a teacher and hockey instructor with Donnan Elementary and Vimy Ridge Academy from 2001 to 2014.

Hitmen General Manager Jeff Chynoweth mentioned “It was imperative to hire an individual with WHL head coaching experience and we believe Steve is a perfect fit.”

He continued “He is an excellent communicator whose teams are known for their hard work and structure. Together with our returning coaching staff we feel we have the right group of personnel for future success.”

Congrats on the hire and Sportswave wishes him all the best.
