Giants Home Opener

The Giants called a press conference prior to their home opener as they introduced their new minority owner and  Maple Ridge’s own Drew Scott, half of the TV show Property Brothers TV show.

The CHL/WHL season is underway with the Vancouver Giants playing host to the visiting Victoria Royals in front of 3722 fans in their home opener at the LEC. 

Considering this was the first game of the season for both teams it started somewhat tentative but soon escalated in a contest that never took long for the fans to get into.

The game itself was close and as a result of a Royals’ major penalty assessed saw the G-men manage to outshoot their Royals 9-2 but headed to the dressing room with the game a scoreless contest.

The Giants started the second with two players in the sin-bin but managed to be perfect keeping Victoria to only 3 shots and were solid in the PK department allowing Victoria only 3 shots. 

With the penalties killed off the Giants Tyler Thorpe (1) put the G-men up 1-0 early at the 2:00 mark that saw the Giants Adam Titbach awarded a penalty shot at 3:17 cashing in on his chance putting the G-men up by a pair.

Numbers count and it was Giants’ rookie Cameron Schmidt who notched his first WHL goal on the PP putting the G-men up 3-0 in a period that saw the Royals outshot the Giants 11-4. 

The third was an even fast paced period, with the Giants Colton Lankow scoring their fourth goal only to have the Royals Deegan Kinniburgh break the shutout at 19:20 mark.

For the first game of the season it was a fun event and despite the win you know that the G-men are looking to build this win on.

While the Giants played a solid contest the night was more of a success with the G-men bringing Drew Scott to the ownership group who overall is a fun loving individual who wasn’t short of the odd comical retort to the media, which ironically was only Steve Ewen and myself.

On a side-note Sportswave continued to make changes moving forward and please note that Bruce Nolte is no longer working with Sportswave in any capacity.
