From the CFL to the BC Winter Games

Playing sport regardless of what one we chose, it takes away from being just plain old Dad.

Such is not the case with Richard White who now spends his time Coaching his Daughters Ringette team and this year he will Coach Vancouver-Squamish Zone 5 Ringette.

ringettePlaying in the CFL is one thing but having a focus on what sport is about deserves lot’s of credit and  while this will not be as physical, it is demanding.

Not only of your time, but your overall approach to the game as well as not being that over baring Coach that everyone loves to hate.
He was a linebacker for Simon Fraser’s Football team, then was drafted by Saskatchewan Roughriders dating back to 1981, which led to a successful five-year career in the CFL.

His daughter became involved in the sport and took up the art of Coaching and has coached at the 2011 Canada Winter Games as well as the 2012 Junior World Championships.

His Ringette team comes from Zone 5 and is the Vancouver-Squamish and he looks forward to leading them into the 2014 BC Winter Games in Mission played in Mission.

Besides coaching he also takes part in the Female Coaching Mentor/Apprentice Program and will be mentoring a young Female apprentice Coach in Mission.

Ringette is a sport where most of the players are Female so it can be tough to mentor or teach, but the young players are focused and want to learn.

The players need a person that they can trust and learn from and being a Dad means not playing favorites toward any player or a group of players.

As a mentor it is important to introduce how to prepare for any game, be it mentally or physically, while no contact or hitting is permitted, but incidental contact will happen – despite what anyone say’s.
In the sport that I coach, where the majority of players are female, it gives the players a person that they can relate to as an athlete that would understand their way of thinking.

It’s called passing it on to today’s youth and for Adults that is most important and we should never forget this plays a huge role as a Coach or Manager.

Congratulations for Richard White for stepping up as a Dad and now giving back to youth sport.
