Fort St. John’s Denny Morrison Suffers Broken Leg

Canadian speed skater, world reigning champion in the 1,500 metres and current World Cup leader in the 1,000 metres, Denny Morrison broke the fibula bone in his left leg while cross-country skiing in Fernie, B.C.

The native of Fort St. John, B.C., who was training on his own while visiting family for the Holiday Season, has returned to Calgary to meet with the national team’s medical staff and specialists to evaluate the injury further and establish a rehabilitation program.

“I’m optimistic about my recovery,” said Morrison. “I’m expecting to be in good form for the World Single Distances Championships in March, which are also a venue test event for the Sochi 2014 Olympics.”

The 27-year-old competed in all five fall World Cups this season, winning gold and silver medals in the 1,000 metres.

The 10-year veteran of international competition was a gold and silver medallist in team pursuit at the 2010 and 2006 Olympics, respectively. Competing in 55 career World Cups, Morrison won 37 individual medals (seven gold, 17 silver and 13 bronze) and 12 in team pursuit (five gold, six silver and one bronze).

The six-time Speed Skating Canada male long track skater of the year has been a 1,500-metre world champion twice (2008 and 2012) and has won four silver and three bronze medals at the World Single Distances Championships.
