European Championships

Published on

We continue to follow the travels of Nikola and Luke and recently I received this post from them letting us know of the travels they have taken and what is on the horizon for the team.
Enjoy the read
The past month all three of us, Nikola, Ian and Luke have been pretty busy and after arriving in Barcelona, we set up the boat and had some great training days.
Then the European Championships started and all was going well – and on the second day we had a 1st place finish in the first race of the day knowing that our speed and training is starting to pay off.
That day was somewhat crazy. It was windy but not crazy windy but the waves were pretty big.
Then, what made it super challenging was there was heaps of wood in the water – huge branches and logs – we had to avoid left and right, at high speeds but sometimes it was impossible and we just had to hope for the best.
In the second race we did hit something in the water and one of our rudders sheared off the back of the boat and we capsized.
Needless to say, our good race turned bad quite quickly and although finished and tried to fix it for the next race, we were unable to sail the 3rd race of the day and our scores dropped drastically.
We had to sit out 2 full days of the competition due to crazy waves which wouldn’t let us leave the harbour. In the final series we were able to pull of another 4th place finish and rounded out to be 21st overall.
Not what we were hoping for, but decent for what we had to overcome.
We are in La Rochelle, France now. We drove here immediately after the Europeans finished as another event started here yesterday. Unfortunately, it was another cancelled day.
Europe is getting pounded by weather, but today we got four great races and we have lots of racing left to look forward to during the week.
After the regatta, we go back to Barcelona, do a training camp and then home!!!
