Delta Blue Jays Three-Time Champions

Everyone living in Delta is extremely proud of their community and in most cases support their local teams and/or charities.

The success of local sports is all due to the many behind the scenes who give their undivided devotion as a volunteer for various sports.

Without these individuals who seldom go nameless are the backbone to the success the local teams do.

While many teams have volunteers the sole responsibility rests on the shoulders of the coaching staff who put together a successful program.

While success is often measured in various ways as long as the players “buy” into the program there is no limit as to how successful they can be.

One such team this year is the Delta Blue Jays who managed to win the third straight U15 Ray Carter Cup Bantam baseball title for the Jays and ironically is the first time any team has won three consecutive titles.

Head Coach Cam Frick is ironically in his 10th season with the Jays mentioned “The boys just played so well.”

He continued “It’s unreal that the Alberta team was by far the best team we have played all year. Our pitchers were unreal. We battled with our bats to get their starter out of the game. It was the best game we played all year, and we needed it to win it. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Delta managed to score an early run and managed to hold that lead through several solid innings knowing that the Alberta team managed to get players on base only to be shut down by Delta’s solid and consistent pitching.

A wild pitch by Alberta allowed the Jays to score their second run in the top of the seventh.

Head Coach Cam Fric mentioned “It was a very stressful game, but getting that second run made it less stressful.”

He continued “Our pitchers who are two of the youngest guys in the tournament, pitched for us in the final and they looked like it was something they had visualized and prepared for their whole lives. When we needed a big strikeout, they got it.”

Delta managed to defeat Manitoba by a 5-0 margin also defeating Quebec by a narrow 2-1 margin on the opening day that gave them the motivation knowing that the championship was within their grasp.

Deven Simonovic was dominant on the mound pitching 5.2 innings allowing only one hit, one walk and 10 strikeouts.

It was ironic that the win came off a walk-off win that saw Toby Wilding hammered a double scoring the winning run in the game.
