With the Pan Am Games taking place in Toronto (July 10-26) we see our athletes having an impressive first week of competition.
The first week see’s Canada reach the 100 medal mark (as of Friday) and they continued to dominate on the track in Milton at the recently built Cisco Milton Pan Am Veoldrome winning in the team pursuit.
Some riders competing in this event took the time off from BC Superweek and skipped the competition on the west coast missing out on the sunshine in the lower mainland.
Regardless, they are seeing the sun shine with Gold at the Cisco Milton Pan Am Veoldrome adding to the medal haul in the women’s pursuit.
The team of Allison Beveridge (Calgary), Laura Brown (Vancouver), Jasmin Glaesser (Coquitlam) and Medicine Hat’s Kirsti Lay finish the race with a record time of four minutes 19.664 seconds.
This is the final to edge the United States, while they (US) grabbed Silver in 4:26.426 while the onlookers saw Mexico beat out Colombia capturing Bronze.
Canada stands in second place in the medal total with 100, one back of the States with multiple events still scheduled as of press time.
Canadians had earned 39 gold, 37 silver and 24 bronze.
Canada’s Women’s squash team didn’t do that well as they had to settle for Silver following a loss to the Americans.
The U.S. won the first two matches in the best-of-three final taking Gold in the event.
Olivia Blatchford opened (11-4, 12-10, 11-8) with a victory over Mississauga’s Hollie Naughton and Amanda Sobhy secured the team victory with an 11-3, 11-2, 11-8 win over Samantha Cornett of Deep River, Ont.
