Cochrane/Overholt Win 40M Freestyle
Finally – Redemption for Emily Overholt.
The day after she took the win, finally some good news for the young swimmer from Vancouver.
First she was disqualified for some strange and obscure rule, now she gets redemption and the win.
She led from start to finish swimming a new Pan Am record, 4:08.42.
The 17-year-old went out in 2:02.58. Over the second half Venezuelan silver medalist Andreina Pinto chipped away at Overholt’s 1.66-second 200m lead.
Pinto would get within a quarter-second with a time of 4:08.67. American Gillian Ryan was third.
Overholt was disqualified yesterday after winning the women’s 400 IM.
Victoria’s Ryan Cochrane never gave up and finally managed to do what he set his sights on.
The fan favorite for Gold took the lead at the 200m mark and never gave up and managed to post a swimming time (Pan Am record) 3:48.29.
Ryan Feeley of the US swam 3:49.69 winning Silver, while Leonardo De Deus of Brazil took third with a time of 3:50.30.
