School starts albeit late this year, but hockey is on the mind of everyone, including those playing in the BCHL throughout the province.
It’s finally here – the games start to count for real and will be packed back to back all weekend at the third-annual Bauer BCHL Showcase at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack.

Exciting news today is that former Nanaimo Clippers star Steve Kariya will be this year’s honorary chairman that saw him take part in the opening ceremonies prior to everyone watching the Chilliwack Chiefs play host to the Powell River King.
In addition to other games the BCHL will host the scholarship and education sessions planned for Saturday and Sunday at Prospera Centre.
Kariya, currently a scout with the New Jersey Devils, played the 1994-95 season with the Nanaimo Clippers scoring 39 goals and 60 assists for 99 points who went on to a four-year NCAA career at the University of Maine where he piled up 187 points in 150 games.
He is one of three brothers to play in the BCHL and go on to Maine along with older brother Paul and younger brother Martin.Steve signed as a free agent after college appeared in 65 NHL games over three seasons, all with the Vancouver Canucks. His career then took him to Europe where he played in top pro leagues in Finland and Sweden.
