Busy Weekend 4 UBC

This past weekend saw the UBC Campus extremely busy as the Men’s Hockey team played their season opener hosting the Alberta Golden Bears.

This was followed up by the Women’s team as the visiting team as they faced off against the Alberta Bears, while the “Birds” Football team traveled to Regina.

The Men’s and Women’s Soccer team’s also saw game action over the busy weekend.

The Men’s hockey team had dropped four straight to start the season but came up with a colossal effort Friday evening defeating the Alberta Golden Bears in a 5-2 win.

They managed to get goals from Adam Vetteri, Joe Antilla, Chase Clayton and Anthony Bardaro with an empty netter added by Adam Rossignol.

Matt Hewitt; fresh off the Canuck game two night’s prior faced 34 shots on the night.

Saturday saw the roles reversed as the Golden Bears got revenge for Friday’s loss with a 9-4 thumping of the Thunderbirds.

This saw the Golden Bears improve to a 2-2 record on the year, while the “Birds” fell to 1-5 on the season.

Women’s Hockey

Head Coach Graham Thomas took his squad to Alberta as his team swept the Golden Bears Women’s teamdube with a 2-0 victory Friday getting goals from Logan Boyd and Mathea Fischer finding the back of the net.

The Pandas outshot Thunderbirds 24-18 through 60 minutes, including 10-1 in the second period, the Pandas shortcomings were on special teams as the second-ranked power play unit entering the matchup went a dismal 0-5.

Saturday saw a different squad take to the ice for the Panda’s as it took the Birds a short 11 seconds in O/T to pull out a 3-2 win at the Clare Drake Arena.

With the win, UBC are now sitting with a 5-1-0 record and take five of a possible six points sweeping Alberta.

The Panda’s drop their fourth-straight decision, three of which have come in over-time spiraling their record to 2-2-2 on the season.

Football

The “Birds” were handed a 35-33 loss at the hands of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies that places the birds to 3-4 in the CIS West thus eliminating them out of the playoff competition this season.

They finish up against the University of Calgary Dinos (next week) at Thunderbird Stadium to complete the season eliminating the defending Vanier Cup Champions from further play.

Soccer

The Men’s team defeated TRU on Saturday 2-1 improving their record to 9-1-6 knocking Thompson Rivers out of the post season.

The women’s soccer team battled to nil-nil draw with Winnipeg and will now face Alberta in the playoffs.

Basketball

The Men’s Basketball team took a pair of games at the Golden Bears Invitational, while the Women’s team defeated the University if Fraser Valley 84-62.

The men’s Volleyball team fell in 5 games to the Trinity Western Spartans by scores of 25-10 25-19 17-25, 19-25 and 15-12 with all matches played at War Memorial Gym at UBC.
