Coquitlam’s Brittany Rogers competing in what will likely be her last World Cup gymnastics competition, won the gold medal in the women’s vault final.
It was Roger’s best ever result at a World Cup event, eclipsing the silver medal she won last November in Croatia, also in the vault event.
“It was definitely a thrill to win after so much hard work, but it was also a little bittersweet, because it’s probably my last World Cup.”
Rogers, who is hoping to cap her stellar career at the Olympics before going off to a gymnastics scholarship in the U.S., scored 13.962 for her two vaults, including a well executed double twisting Yurchenko that earned the single highest score of the competition.
“The Yurchenko has really improved since I did it for the first time in competition at the world championships in 2009,” said Rogers.
“I’m definitely more confident with it now and it’s really satisfying to see the hard work pay off with a gold medal.”
Dominique Pegg of Sarnia, Ont., finished 5th (13.537).
Rogers competes again on Sunday in the beam final while Pegg will be going for a medal in both the floor and beam events.
Both gymnasts are among a strong group of Olympic hopefuls vying for a spot on Canada’s six-member women’s team.
