Boston – Global Release
BOSTON is the first-ever feature-length documentary film about the world’s most prestigious footrace, which is now available on several digital platforms, such as Amazon.
La Roma films’ award-winning producer/director and marathoner, Jon Dunham is excited about the release, which is distributed globally by Lionsgate.
Dunham shares his thoughts on the release here in an emailed Q&A.
Q: What was the process like in getting the film released worldwide?
A: Since BOSTON’s premiere in April, it has continued to screen in cinemas across North America throughout the summer and fall.
We spoke with many potential distribution partners but finally found a good fit with Lionsgate. We are thrilled that they will make BOSTON available in 96 countries – the biggest launch a film about running has ever had!
Q: How excited were you and your team to receive the news?
A: We were thrilled to finalize the agreement with Lionsgate and to make BOSTON so widely available before the end of the year.
Q: What other message does the film have for viewers, other than recapping the marathon’s rich history and documenting its standing as the world’s oldest annually competed marathon?
A: BOSTON is way more than a film about the history of the Boston Marathon. It is a film that traces the evolution of our sport and what running has come to mean to so many people all around the world.
It is also a true celebration of triumph over tragedy, which is what we saw in Boston in 2014 the year following the bombings.
Q: How long did it take to make this film?
I really love this film. There was so much that went into it. It was many years in the making as executive producer Tom Derderian and I first started discussing it back in 2006.
As a result, the comprehensiveness of the stories, the quality of archival footage, the production value, etc. are all at a very high level. You just cannot make a film like this overnight.
Q: Where can we see the film?
A: BOSTON will be available on digital platforms such as iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, etc. starting on December 5. It will be available On-Demand on December 19th.
BOSTON is narrated by Academy Award® winner Matt Damon (1997, Best Original Screenplay, Good Will Hunting) and is produced with The Kennedy/Marshall Company.
BOSTON chronicles the story of the iconic race as it evolved from a working man’s challenge, to welcoming foreign athletes and eventually women; becoming the stage for many firsts and in no small part paving the way for the modern marathon and mass participatory sports.
The film features many of running’s greatest champions, including Shalane Flanagan, Meb Keflezighi, Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter and Joan Benoit Samuelson.
In addition to chronicling the race’s history, BOSTON film Director had 16 camera rolling recording the preparations and eventual running of the 118th Boston Marathon one year after the 2013 bombings when runners and community gather in support of one another for what will be the most meaningful race of all time.
The film immerses the viewer into the world of the marathon – the only sport in which an everyday athlete can participate alongside the best in the world – to experience the preparation, competition and camaraderie of the runners and the loyal dedication and support of spectators.
