Adam Svensson Places 2nd
The 85th Mexican Amateur Golf Championship wrapped up on Sunday and two members of Team Canada’s developmental squad turned in big results at the Guadalajara Country Club.
Surrey B.C.’s Adam Svensson carded a sizzling final round 65 to finish in second place, four shots back of Mexico’s Sebastien Vazquez, who won for the second consecutive year.
Svensson opened with a one-over 73 but followed it up with a two-under 70 in the second round to remain in contention.
He matched his first round total with another 73 in his third round but followed it up with a 65, the lowest round carded by any competitor in the tournament.
Airdrie, Alta.’s Riley Fleming saved his best stuff for last as he carded a final round three-under 69 to finish alone in 5th place in the 136-man field.
Fleming and Svensson combined to make up Canada’s contingent at the Mexican Amateur, which finished second, 15 shots behind Mexico. Colombia finished third, a single shot back of the Canadians.
Team Canada’s assistant coach Robert Ratcliffe accompanied the duo in Mexico and was impressed by their play this week.
“Both Adam and Riley represented Canada like stars this week at the Mexican Amateur. With final rounds of 65 and 69 respectively, both Team Canada Members made the top 5 in a hotly contested event with a great field.” Ratcliffe said.
Both Svensson and Fleming will be taking part in next week’s Toyota World Junior Championship in Japan. Despite a short rest period between tournaments, Ratcliffe has positive vibes heading into the event.
“There’s not much rest time for the boys as after only two days at home, we’ll be traveling to Nagayo, Japan to compete in the Toyota World Junior Championship. Based on this week’s performance, I like our chances of a good finish in Japan.”
Another pair of competitors from British Columbia made the trip to Guadalajara.
The duo was selected as representatives for their province based on their ranking in the 2011 Titleist Order of Merit.
2011 B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur runner up Brent Wilson of Victoria carded rounds of 73-74-75-75 to finish in a tie for 22nd while 2011 B.C. Amateur Champion David Rose struggled to rounds of 84-73-80 to finish in a tie for 88th place.
Rose did not make the 54-hole cut.
