Saturday night capped and four day build up in the BC Boy’s Provincial Boys High School Basketball Championships as four champions were crowned before 4,876 fans.
The Championship was moved from the Agrodome to the prestigious Langley Event Centre and is the largest in three years the event has been staged, hosting the Single A, Double A, Triple A and Quadruple A Championships.
In the Single A, Kelowna Christian Knights defeated the Immaclata Mustangs 59-46 and never trailed from the opening tip-off and took a commanding lead (26-15) at the half with both lighting up the scoreboard in the second half.
Kelowna Christian 33 and Immaculate 31 three players on the Knights had outstanding games Cruz Anderson and outstanding defensive player of the tournament Owen Klukas both with 16 points as well Jesse Stewart with 15 points selected the tournament MVP.
Leading scorers for Immaculata were Michael Gini with 18 and Corbin Beauchemin with 15 points led the Mustangs.
Double A Championship was captured by St. Michaels University Blue Jags as they controlled the Delview Raiders from the opening quarter.
The Blue jags had a 16 4 run to start the game but the Raiders eventually managed to close the gap to within 6 points with the first quarter coming to a close and only trailing 19 to 13.
The second half saw St. Michaels run away with the with the game out scoring the Raiders 37 – 18 and managing to pull off a 66 to 40 win.
The Blues Jags were led by Jason Scully (22 points) and Graeme Hyde-Lay (16 points) who was selected the defensive player of the tournament.
MVP went to Max Pollen of St. Michaels while Raiders Wowie Untalan finished with 15 points and Rehman Solehria with 11 points respectfully.
In the Triple A the Fleetwood Park Dragons came back after falling behind 21 to 6 after the first quarter to Sir Charles Tupper.
They managed to outscore the Tigers 18 to 12 in the second quarter trailing by 10 at the half (34 to 24) and continued to heat things up in the third with 21 points to only trail by 2 (37-35) entering the final quarter.
The final quarter saw the Dragons dominate Sir Charles Tupper to complete the comeback to win the game by a narrow 8 points (73-65) to capture the first Provincial Title.
They outscored the Tigers 28 to 18 to make the comeback complete.
The Dragons were led by Emeka Okuma with 20 points as he was named the Defensive player of the tourney and John McChesney of Charles Hays took MVP honors as well a game high 16 points from Noah Licas of the Dragons Chris Schneller led the Tigers with 21 points.
The final game of the night and week long event saw the Quadruple “A” match up between the Yale Tigers and the and the Terry Fox Ravens.
This was a classic back and fourth throughout the night and the end result saw the Championship Trophy presented to the Yale Tigers for the third time with a narrow 69-63 victory.
The Yale Lions led 21-19 after the first quarter and 33-32 at the half with the game staying close throughout the night.
The Lions led 52-49 heading into the fourth quarter of what many were calling one of the best finals ever to be played at this level of the game.
The game at times was very physical as both two top-ranked teams with the lead changing 15 times and saw the game tied 12 times throughout the night, but Yale outscored Terry Fox 17-14 in the final quarter
The end result saw the Yale Lions crowned Quadruple “A” Champions as they outscored the Ravens 69-63 to grab the hardware.
MVP of the tournament Jauquin Bennett Boire had 44 points in the game in leading his team to the title and the defensive player of the tournament was Scott Barker of Terry Fox
This marks a new era for BC High School Boys basketball with the introduction of the 4 Championship titles being awarded and it only took 70 years to do it.
