Canada Day is always special but this day was extra special with Team Canada having a double header pulling out a pair of wins.
Their first opponent for the early game at one was against New Zealand managing a whopping 9-0 win followed by their second game at six finishing with a 9-1 win over Mexico.
In conversation with many of the fans, especially the young fans, they were thrilled to watch New Zealand begin showing off their traditional Māori Haka war dance following national anthems.
Albeit impressive for the fans to watch it was Team Canada with a fast start managing five-runs in the first inning as Zoe Hicks hammered a home run in the first.
As if one wasn’t enough Erika Polidori also managed to send the ball out of the park giving Canada a 7-0 lead in the second.
As one fan told me “it’s power coming off the bats” which is what allowed Canada to grab an impressive game one win.
Realistically speaking you never know what you get in any game but game two was simply all controlled by Team Canada again over Mexico.
The game to the surprise of many was close but only until the fourth when Canada managed an impressive six runs on five hits eventually pulling out a 9-1 win.
For those unsure, 12 teams were competing in this year’s International competition that saw Canada take on the Philippines for a night game the following night with the first pitch set for 6 pm that saw Canada again dominating with a 12-0 win.
Team Canada would again play a night game against Israel July 3, finishing with the final “pool game” against Hong Kong Thursday at 6pm as these two International squad’s would take to the diamond that had the stands full of supporters for both teams.
For those not knowing the event attracts over 1,500 top level athletes from various countries around the world with Canada having all the pressure clearly on them.
Given the talent on display all teams have their sights set on making the playoffs running July 5, 6 and 7 with the Gold Medal final Sunday July 7, at 6 pm. at the park..
