2024 Team Canada Roster

The Canadian Hockey League officially announced that 20 CHL players will suit u for Canada’s National Junior Team at this year 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship played in Gothenburg Sweden running from December 26 – January 5, 2024. 

Eight are from the Western Hockey League, seven from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with five from the Ontario Hockey League in hopes of winning their third straight gold medals. 

Should this happen it will be the first time since winning five (in a row) from 2005-09 noting that Owen Beck (Peterborough Petes) is the only player returning from Canada’s team that won Gold in the 2023 World Juniors.

CHL forwards include selected are the CHL’s leading scorer Carson Rehkopf (Kitchener Rangers), 2022-23 QMJHL scoring champion Jordan Dumais (Halifax Mooseheads) and Matthew Savoie (Wenatchee Wild) who is averging 2.18 points per game this season who currently ranks second in the CHL behind only Dumais  who has 2.24.

There are four NHL first-round picks in Oliver Bonk (London Knights), Maveric Lamoureux (Drummondville Voltigeurs), Tanner Molendyk (Saskatoon Blades) and Denton Mateychuk (Moose Jaw Warriors), who started this season with a 23-game point streak which is the second-longest streak by a WHL defenseman dating back to 2009.

Scott Ratzlaff (Seattle Thunderbirds) will be the starter with Samuel St-Hilaire (Sherbrooke Phoenix), and Mathis Rousseau (Halifax Mooseheads), who’s .934 SV% this season ranks second in the CHL. 

Four CHL players who have played NHL games are Tristan Luneau (Gatineau Olympiques), Fraser Minten (Saskatoon Blades), Savoie and Beck. 

Out of the 20 CHL players selected Owen Allard (Soo Greyhounds), St-Hilaire, and Rousseau are the only three undrafted players but are all eligible for the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. 

Alan Letang (Sarnia Sting) is the Head Coach for this year’s squad who helped Canada win Gold at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship as an Assistant Coach, 

Gilles Bouchard will be an Assistant Coach (Sherbrooke Phoenix) and will be joined by Kamloops Blazers Shaun Clouston and Guelph Storm’s Scott Walker..

Canada will open its pre-tournament schedule taking on a U25 team from Denmark December 19th before facing Switzerland December 22nd followed by a game against the US on December 23rd.

The 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship begins on Boxing Day when Canada plays Finland at 8:30 AM, Eastern time which is 5:30 AM in Vancouver so set your alarm for an early rise!!!
