Olympics

We all know that the Olympics are expensive and any country hosting the games and looking at recouping any loss they might incur, but that’s  not always the case.

The games are all about money and they clearly exploit the athlete at all levels of sport, thus the concern with the NHL attending any upcoming events.

In the end they will attend if for no other reason the exposure they will get, but we all know they don’t need any extra exposure, but it’s about the money more than anything else.

Sure the games in Vancouver and Whistler were a success, but that is mainly due to Canada as a whole, but think about some of the other countries that struggle financially.

They award the games years in advance so the countries can build the massive stadiums so they can attract the world, but that’s not always the case.

The planned 2020 Tokyo games are er-were in the process of building a new Olympic Stadium with a projected budget of $2 billion, which is a record for sports stadiums.

Now word is that they are scrapping the plans for the stadium in a release from prime Minister Shinzo Abe, according the Reuters.

It has been criticized for its overall cost and its design, whereas it actually looks like a bicycle helmet, ever since or shortly after Tokyo beat Madrid and Istanbul in an International Olympic Committee vote to host the 2020 Olympics on Sept. 7/13.

At one point the projected costs were reported $3 billion, though it had later been planned to be cut in size by 25 percent before it was scrapped altogether.

It is reported that the most expensive sports stadium in history (to date) are the New York Giants and New York Jets’ MetLife Stadium at a cost $1.6 billion.

IOC Vice President John Coates stated “We take note of the decision by Prime Minister Abe to review the design plan and to look for a feasible solution that will offer a state of the art stadium with top level conditions for athletes and spectators.”

He continued “We understand that the review of the stadium will not affect its delivery for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and we will work with the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee to ensure that what is needed for the games is delivered in the revised plan.”bike helmet 1

It is reported that a competition for a new stadium design would be held within the next six months with plans to finish the stadium by spring 2020.

Should this happen it is reported that the new stadium would then not be ready for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Only time will tell!!
