2024 Men’s World Box Championship Staff

We first posted the first part of the staff for the upcoming championships being held in September 2024 and wanted to share the remaining staff members who deserve recognition.

Assistant Coach: Curt Malawsky

Malawsky joins the staff having spent the last 13 seasons in a front office and coaching capacity with the Calgary Roughnecks, most recently as Assistant General Manager and Head Coach.

He initially joined the Roughnecks staff in the summer of 2009 as an Associate Coach/Offence Coordinator and Assistant General Manager, shortly after the conclusion of his playing career which also finished in Calgary. 

During his first three seasons with the organization, the Roughnecks compiled a 33-15 regular season record, achieving two first-place division finishes and a second-place finish.  

In the summer of 2012, 

Malawsky was promoted to Head Coach of the Roughnecks while retaining his title as Assistant General Manager. 

Since then, he has guided the club to a 90-80 regular season record, supplemented by eight of nine possible playoff appearances (14-11 record), two Championship Finals, and the 2019 NLL Championship. 

Last season, Malawsky won the Les Bartley Award for NLL Coach of the Year thanks to a franchise record 13-win campaign.

Curt recently accepted the head coach and general manager position to return to his home province with the Vancouver Warriors. 

Malawsky played 12 seasons in the NLL as a forward, splitting time between the Roughnecks, Arizona Sting, San Jose Stealth, Vancouver Ravens, and Rochester Knighthawks.

In 159 career regular season games played, he registered 537 points, 103 penalty minutes, and 574 loose balls.

Malawsky also appeared in 20 NLL playoff games during his career, posting 49 points and winning one NLL Championship with the Calgary Roughnecks in his final playing season. 

Malawsky was a member of the 2003 Canadian National team that won gold, along with being on the coaching staff for the  induction into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a box player in 2015 and into the Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame in 2022. 

Assistant Coach: Pat Coyle

Team Canada assistant coach Pat Coyle has had tremendous success as an athlete in field and box lacrosse. 

He played for Team Canada in three different world championships—the FIL U19 Men’s Lacrosse World Championship , the 2002 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship and the 2003 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. 

After 12 seasons playing in the National Lacrosse League  for Toronto Rock and Colorado Mammoth, he has now been coaching the Colorado Mammoth for eight years. 

After serving as the organization’s general manager since the 2018 season, Coyle transitioned his focus to coaching in July of 2020 as Brad Self was named general manager. 

After leading the team to a 7-6 record during the shortened 2019-20 NLL season, 

Coyle saw a majority of his squad return for a triumphant run in 2021-22. Despite finishing the regular season 10-8 and in third place of the West Conference, Coyle led his group to a 5-2 record in the postseason to help capture the organization’s second NLL Championship and first since 2006.

A five-time champion in his 12-year playing career, Coyle hoisted the Champion’s Cup four times with the Toronto Rock (1999, 2000, 2002-03) and once with the Mammoth (2006). Coyle was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2017. 

In 2014, Coyle became the first defenseman in league history to be inducted into the NLL Hall of Fame.

Ted Cordingley: Equipment Manager

Ted Cordingley has been the equipment manager for the Buffalo Bandits from 2007-2023.

He is still active in this role and has also been able to help out the Canadian National team on 3 separate occasions. 

He was the equipment manager for the 2015 World Championship, 2017 Heritage Cup, and the 2019 World Championships. 

Ted’s experience around the sport has helped him become one of the most notable staff members in lacrosse, and we look forward to bringing him back for the 2024 Championships.

Head Athletic Therapist: Tyler Quennell

Tyler has been a Sports Medicine practitioner for over 23 years with various teams across multiple sports. 

His current position with the Toronto Rock Lacrosse Club (NLL) led him to assist Team Canada’s Men’s Box Team at the Heritage Cup in 2017 and the inaugural Men’s Sixes Team that competed and won gold at the World Games in Alabama in 2022.
