It’s that time of the year where students are finalizing what to buy for school, parents are taking the final holiday before labour day, while others want to hit the “links” and get in the final round of golf.
That is unless you live in the lower mainland or parts of British Columbia where we golf year round and make the rest of Canada envious.
One such event took place at the Vancouver Golf and Country Club in Coquitlam, where day one saw the second pro-am tee off.
Each team of three amateurs is joined by one Canadian or International golfer, plus one sports celebrity or sports personality unique to the area.
The event which tee’d off at 12:30 saw the likes of former Canuck goaltender Kirk McLean, NHLer Dennis Kearns, left winger Darcy Rota and former Canuck goalie Cesare Maniago.
Joining them were the likes of Brooke Henderson, who just came off the recent win at the Portland Classic, Lorie Kane (4-time winner on the LPGA tour and Member of the Order of Canada), Michelle Kim and Christine Wong.
Sticking with Brooke for a moment, most watched her victory this past weekend at the Cambia Portland Classic, where she becomes the youngest Canadian (ever) to win on the LPGA or PGA Tour in addition to being the first Canadian since Lorie Kane in 2001 to win on the LPGA.
All proceeds for the Pro-Am benefit the Golf Canada Foundation, whose mission it to provide golfers/industry partners with a charitable platform to increase participation in golf.
We (Laird and I) arrived at the course in Coquitlam mid-morning to get registered as well as get the course layout, knowing where we were allowed to go and what was out of bounds.
Always good to know this in advance, so as not to create any problems for the event and it’s also a chance on opening day to get some great storylines.
If you have a passion for golf, stop by and catch all the action from tee to pin and see how this year’s LPGA ends up.
You’ll be impressed with what you see!!
It’s nothing like the late Robin Williams take on golf!!
