While the season might be a few months away there is no rest for the Coaching staff that work so hard to put a winning product on the ice for your overall enjoyment.

The UBC Women’s hockey program continues to grow each and every year under the guidance of Head Coach Graham Thomas and the coming season won’t be any different.

I received the following note from Graham and wanted to share as they are hosting an event September 8th and you should mark the date on your calendar.

Dear friends and supporters:

It is hard to believe another season is behind us and we are heading into summer. With that being said we are already planning for next year.

Please save the date for the inaugural Women’s Hockey Ice and Dice Casino Night Fundraiser. Join us as we bring a little bit of Las Vegas to the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in support of the Women’s Ice Hockey Program.

Dueling Pianos, casino tables and a silent auction will make this a ‘not to miss’ event on the 2017/2018 varsity calendar. Those that are taking part in the casino games, may want to do some pre-game online playing first, so they are prepared and ready for the night. They can go onto pussy888 register and sign up to see what games they can go on to give themselves that extra boost. Furthermore, many people tend to find that they have a large enjoyment towards playing casino games after they have participated in a casino night or played other online games. Their enjoyment for playing various casino games might then urge them to ask is Royal Vegas the best online casino or could they look elsewhere to gamble a little bit of money while online? The opportunity to play poker, blackjack, roulette, and many more at any point with your phone is a great way to win some extra cash and improve their skills. Also, if they want to become multicultural with their skills it might be wise to know that places like Japan has different online casinos and, therefore, being good at different styles of games gives them the upper hand with any casino night.

Further details and tickets will be released shortly. We hope to see all there!

Update from Coach Graham Thomas,

What a year it was for the 16/17 edition of the UBC Women’s hockey team! The T-Birds finished the CanadaWest regular season 23-4 -1 (W/L/OTL) while setting a program record 15 game unbeaten streak along with another record of 23 regular season wins.

The year saw the ‘Birds sit in top spot for the majority of the season as the number one ranked team in the U Sports Top 10 and it was the first time in UBC Hockey history, both men’s and women’s, to win the CanadaWest Regular Season title.

After two weekends of playoff hockey at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre the Thunderbirds were able to hoist the Ethel Catherwood Trophy as CanadaWest Champions for the second consecutive year in front of the loyal blue and gold supporters.

The ‘Birds had a heartbreaking loss in the semi-final game of the U Sports National Championship in Napanee, ON with a 1-0 result against the McGill Martlets.

But in true Thunderbird fashion the group rallied together to capture the Bronze medal, finishing 3rd in the country with a 2-0 win over the Concordia Stingers the following day.

The season was capped off with 10 players being named Academic All-Canadians!

The Thunderbirds also made national headlines with their initiatives for mental health awareness as they honoured their fallen teammate Laura Taylor.

Because of the Women’s Hockey Team speaking out, the whole of UBC rallied around the mental health cause and UBC’s presence on Bell Let’s Talk Day, a national awareness campaign, was by the far the most of any other Canadian university.

Along with Bell Let’s Talk, the ‘Birds partnered with the Vancouver Canucks “Hockey Talks” event including a ceremonial puck drop by your Thunderbird Captains.

Women’s Hockey gained department wide recognition for the community engagement which saw them involved with Lace Up for Kids, Hockey for the Homeless, Canucks on Campus, Women’s Hockey’s own initiative; Skate with a Thunderbird and lastly a loyal supporter of all of UBC’s varsity sporting events.

All of this would not be possible without your ongoing support.

We are already looking forward to next year and coming back stronger and achieving our goal of a National Championship!

I look forward to seeing you at the Ice and Dice Event in September.

Sincerely,

Graham
