Taylor Kim tops the leaderboard after she shot an outstanding six-under-par 67 on Tuesday during the first round of the 111th British Columbia Golf Women’s Amateur Championship at Kamloops Golf and Country Club.
The Kent State Sophomore played an exceptional first round with seven birdies decorating her scorecard.
She ran into trouble just before the turn, bogeying the 376-yard par 4, but recovered quickly and shot three consecutive birdies out.
At 19, Kim is already a highly accomplished amateur player and has finished in the top five at the Women’s Amateur since 2011
Three-time Amateur Champion (2006, 2009, 2011) Christina Proteau, finished day one in second place, just two strokes back of Kim with a -4 on the 6462-yard par 73 course.
Coming off a strong top five finish at the Junior Girls’ Championship last week, Alisha Lau shot an impressive three-under-par 70 and sits tied for third with Portland State Viking, A Ram Choi, of Surrey.
Kelowna’s Megan Osland takes the final spot in the top five of the Amateur Championship after shooting 71 (-2).
The 2014 Junior Girls’ Champion, Naomi Ko, who won the title less than a week ago at The Dunes at Kamloops, shot -1 and is currently tied for sixth with Sophie Liu.
Mid-Amateur Championship
The Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship runs concurrently with the Amateur with 11 golfers competing in both categories.
After the first day of competition, the Championship’s top three is comprised of only Vancouver Island golfers. Proteau, of Port Alberni, leads comfortably by six strokes.
In 2013, Proteau captured her third British Columbia Golf Mid-Amateur Championship title in five years and with a strong start on the first day of competition proved she is pushing for number four.
Following in second is Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay who finished her round off strong birdieing 18 for a two-over-par 75.
Victoria’s Eileen Kelly and Lake Cowichan’s Karen Kloske are tied for third just a single stroke behind Stouffer at +3, each boasting two birdies in the first round.
