Whitecaps Game Postponed
The MLS game between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Real Salt Lake has been postponed due to weather conditions or worst yet – an unplayable field.
Temporary grass sod was laid over the artificial turf at Empire Field in hopes of allowing more prep-time for the International Friendly July 18th in a game which will take place between the Whitecaps and England’s Manchester City.
Whitecaps CEO Paul Barber stated “We have been working around the clock to do everything in our powers to keep the field as dry as possible”. He continues “Unfortunately, the combination of consistent rain and limited drainage options available for a temporary grass field has left us no other choice.”
The temporary field is made up of 8,360 square metres of sod and was laid at a cost of about $200,000. The sod includes a mixture of earth and sand that doesn’t lend itself to drainage.
Barber adds Monday’s game is scheduled to go ahead as planned, so don’t change your plans.
The Whitecaps say the game between Real Salt Lake will be made up at a later date. Once I receive notice, I will pass it on.
