Fans come out and support the local team, but from what I am hearing the home team isn’t exactly getting the support they need to exist in West Kelowna.

So on to yet another chapter in the life of a local hockey team, who in this case is apparently making plans on a re-location to Delta’s Sungod Arena.

It should be know that the last BCJHL team that played in Delta was in 1982 when the Delta Suns hit the ice for a short-live experience and eventually moved to Powell River on the Sunshine Coast.

From there it’s been a hodge-poss for teams, with Delta primarily being home for the PJHL for various teams – all of which have moved.

Why – well for one reason, it was due to lack of community involvement from the team to engage the North Delta residents, so the attendance was extremely poor.

So after the support of the fans in West Kelowna and one short after winning the National Championship they are looking at making a ground-breaking move from Royal Lepage Place to Delta’s Sungod Arena.

It’s reported that City Council last November voted to reduce the team’s annual rent from $63,000 to $52,000, which is apparently in line to both Vernon and Salmon Arm pay.

Well I for one not only welcome but embrace the move to Delta several factors play into the equation of the move and gathering a strong fan base.

First is getting not only involved with the  minor program, but meeting and engaging the community from 120th to River Road and in between.

It’s reported that owner (past) Mark Cheyne told the media that the club lost $300,000 last season, in which the BCHL board discussed the issue earlier in the week.

The West Kelowna Warriors have spent the past 11 season in the area and any decision such as this can’t be easy.

Delta’s Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture mentioned that “approval is happening this week”, so we’ll have to wait and see.

I am hearing that the move was given a vote of confidence by North Delta MHA and they are willing to re-locate teams to accommodate the Junior A franchise, but not sure to what extent.

The BCHL currently has 17 teams and I am also hearing that discussion is underway for a possible WHL franchise in Nanaimo?

More to follow and Sportswave will keep you posted on the status of the club and it’s pending move to Delta.
