Video in ‘poor taste’

The team is the Calgary Flames affiliate AHL team and in the first season of operation in Glens Falls which is a far cry from the previous location of Abbotsford BC.

I have included the video – so you be the judge!!

Playing in its inaugural (first) season sees the team take to the ice October 10th and regardless of your thoughts – the Heat have flamed out and now belong to a new location.

Someone is in hot water over a video that should have never been allowed to be shown at any level of the hockey and now, this video is burning up the internet.

The team has made an official apology  for a skit introducing its new mascot as a firefighter-whuppin’ flame from a devastating 19th-century fire.

The Adirondack Flames introduced “Scorch” the day prior to the opening day in hopes of gathering more fan support in and around the area.

The mascot’s back story is that he’s the lone surviving ember from an 1864 fire that destroyed much of Glens Falls.

ahl flames 1In a video of the skit produced by the Glens Falls Post-Star newspaper, Scorch is seen emerging from behind a small tree to overpower a firefighter, knocking him to the ground as “POW!” appears on the screen.

Two hours after introducing Scorch, the team issued an apology listed below.

“Earlier today we unveiled our new mascot Scorch.  In an attempt to provide background material for the character who will be the face of our team, particularly with young fans, we crafted a story that Scorch was the remaining ember from the tragic fire that destroyed much of Glens Falls in 1864.

We also crafted a skit that helped to launch the new mascot – with the help of the Glens Falls Fire Department.
While it seemed in good taste when it was on the drawing board, it is evident now that it was in poor taste.
On behalf of our entire organization we want to apologize for our thoughtlessness today and we have obviously turned something good, the launch of a mascot which we will use to entertain and encourage young fans, into something that is in poor taste.
That was not our intention and again we apologize.
We would like to emphasize that we as an organization take seriously the dangers associated with fire, understand its potentially devastating effects and acknowledge that those in our nation who are called upon to face and fight fires on a daily basis are truly heroes.
We apologize.” – Brian Petrovek, President, Adirondack Flames.
