SFU Men’s hockey team broke a two game losing streak with an impressive 11-2 win over the University of Victoria in action played January 19th last Saturday in BCIHL league play.
They were leading 2-0 after the opening period and 6-0 after two. In the final period they put five more markers on the board to end their losing streak in league play finishing of UVIC 11-2.
Shots in the game were 40-33 for SFU as goalkeeper Graeme Gordon finished with 31 saves for the victory as they improved to 11-3-0-1 moving them to second place in league standings behind Selkirk University, who is 14-1.
SFU’s next game is on Saturday January 26th when they visit Trinity Western at the Langley Event Centre. Face-off is set for 7:00 pm.
UBC Women’s Hockey
The Action was one way to describe the sports scene from the 18th to the 20th at the UBC campus with the participation of all teams playing.
The Women’s Hockey Team came closer to clinching a playoff berth in the CIS by taking three of four points from the Saskatchewan Huskies with a 3-0 win on Saturday and a 3-2 shootout loss on Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Sports Centre. \
Daniel Dube was outstanding for the T-Birds in the game stopping 41 of 43 shots fired at her opponent Cassidy Hendricks finished with 35 saves on 37 shots for the win.
UBC improved it’s season record to 11-7-5 good for fourth place as they head into their final 6 games of the regular season.
They take to the road for a pair of weekend games in Calgary (Mount Royal) and then return home on February 1 and 2 to face Manitoba Bisons at the Doug Mitchel Sports Centre.
Men’s Hockey
Saturday saw the Huskies turn the tables on the “Birds” with 4-3 O/T win in front of a fair size crowd. UBC got goals from Wilson, Fleming, and Grassi the Huskies marksmen were Smuk, Herrod, Spafford (in regulation) while Trask netted the game winner in O/T.
Stanford took the loss for the Birds making 28 saves in the loss which saw UBC improve to 12-7-3 on the season sitting in fifth, one point back of Calgary 14-8-0 for the final playoff spot in the Canada West Standings.
The shortened season has only six games left. UBC host Mount Royal on Friday night at home and play a nooner on Saturday.
Volleyball
Women’s action continued which saw them sweep Thompson Rivers Friday 3-1 and 3-0 on Saturday, while the Men split their games winning 3-0 on Saturday after losing 3-1 on Friday, also to Thompson Rivers.
Basketball
The Men swept Regina winning 90-75 (Friday) and 75-65 the following night, while the women split their games winning 78-39 Friday and losing 63-53 0n Saturday in front of a marginal size crowd.
UBC host University of Northern BC in Volley Ball on the weekend and the Men also play UNBC. Game times are 6 and 8 pm with the women playing first, followed by the Men’s game. Saturday the Women tip off at 5 and the Men at 7pm.
