Home For A Day

With the BC Lions being displaced from BC Place for one game, the ideal location to play is at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium.

Other than the location one main difference is the number of seats that they will be available to the public as UBC seats can seat 3,500 in the main grandstand area.

By using the surrounding grass embankment the facility can accommodate (up to) 8,500 spectators, but at least they are getting the game in.

The BC Lions announced this morning that the team will play its home preseason game against the Edmonton Eskimos at UBC’s David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium on Friday, June 19 at 7:00 pm presented by Pepsi.

“We’re pleased to have both the date and location of the preseason game now finalized,” said Lions president and CEO Dennis Skulsky. “The size and layout of Thunderbird Stadium allows us to offer some very exclusive game-day opportunities that we cannot undertake at BC Place, so we believe it’s going to be a memorable experience for everyone.”

With the stadium’s limited seating capacity, the Lions will offer season ticketholders first crack at tickets for the Friday night matchup and will be contacting them in coming days with more details.

The club will return to their den at BC Place at the conclusion of the FIFA Women’s World Cup to host their home-opener versus the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday, July 10 presented by TELUS.

“We are thrilled to host the BC Lions preseason game at UBC Thunderbird Stadium which will deliver an exceptional fan and team experience,” said Blake Nill, head coach, UBC Thunderbird Football. football 1

“This event builds on our partnership with the BC Lions, our mutual commitment to developing football excellence and supports UBC’s goal to host outstanding sports and entertainment events for the community.”
