Friday proved very successful for the sports programs at UBC as they won 5 of the 6 games on the schedule of the CIS teams. Both Hockey squads won over Lethbridge, while as the B-Ball ball teams nailed victories over Manitoba.
Girls Volleyball swept Winnipeg, with the only blemish on the night was a loss by the men’s volleyball team in a tough 5 set loss the Winnipeg Wisemen at War Memorial.
The Women’s hockey team set a new mark for victories (in a season) with 9 in a 5-3 win over the Lethbridge Lady Pronghorns at the Doug Mitchell Sports Centre.
The visitors opened the scoring midway through the period on a goal on the PP by Jenna-Marie Durin. This proved to be short lived as UBC’s Tatiana Rafter scored her first (of two) les than three minutes later evening the game at one.
The old record was held by ex-Birds coach Nancy Wilson, was at the helm of the program in the early 2000, when she accomplished the feat not once but twice.
With 1:43 left in the first Boesch gave the T-Birds a 2-1 lead beating Pronghorns goalkeeper Shauntelle Parsons. with 1:43 remaining in the opening period. Shots in the first period were 12-10 for Lethbridge.
In the second O’Neil extended the UBC lead to 3-1 less than three minutes. UBC took a 4-1 lead with 5:52 left in the second off the stick of Capozzi.
This allowed the “Birds” to take a three goal lead into the final period. Shots in the 2nd were 10-6 for UBC and 18-17 through 40 minutes.
Lethbridge had a solid third period coming out strong against the T-Birds and pressed Daniel Dube who played exceptional for UBC.
While the Pronghorns enjoyed a 11-3 edge in shots in the final period, this allowed them to put more on the board.
They got scoring from Beattie and Reeves 1:08 apart cutting the “Birds” lead to 4-3 with a mere 3:07 remaining.
The “Birds” managed to grab an empty net marker off the stick of Rafter her second of the game, rounding out the final score of 5-3 for UBC.
Shots were 28-21 for Lethbridge while UBC “tender” Daniel Dube was outstanding in the victoryThe win gives the “Birds” a 9-7-3 record in the CIS West Standings, allowing them to hold down 4th place, which (currently) allows a playoff position. Lethbridge fell to 6-10-3 on the year in the West Standings.
Volley Ball Action
The “Birds” Women’s team won their 11th straight with a 25-21, 25-14, 25-15 set victory over the Winnipeg Wisemen. The men fell in five sets to Winnipeg winning only the first two sets 26-24, and 25-13.
The Wisemen rallied winning the final three sets 25-18, 25-22, and 16 to get match point and win the game 3-2.
B-Ball Action
The “Birds” Men’s and Women’s teams were victorious defeating Manitoba 87-61 (Men’s) action, while the Women won 68-53 also over the Bisons.
The Men’s hockey team blasted Lethbridge 7-1 on the road.
