The University of Alberta Pandas defeated the T-birds Womens Hockey team with a 6-1 win on Saturday giving them the win on both night’s at the Doug Mitchell Sports Centre.
This improves them to a league best 10-3-3 in CIS Women’s hockey.
Saturday the Pandas led 3-0 after the opening period and 5-1 heading into the final period before adding one more to make the final 6-1 over UBC again shots in the game were one sided with a 22-8 edge after forty minutes and 30-14 in the game.
Melinda Choy of the T-Birds was outstanding before being pulled in the final period Hillary Talbot who made a rare appearance this season.
Jeninifer Jubb scored twice in the opening period for the Pandas and Katie Stewart added a single. Shots in the first were 13-1 for Alberta as the score could have been higher if not for the play of Birds tender Melinda Choy who played stellar between the pipes.
Karla Bourke made it 4-0 5:49 in on the power play before the Thunderbirds finally got on the scoreboard on a goal by Lauren Ruggiero with 6:45 remaining in the second to cut the lead to 4-1.
Alberta added another late goal with :13 seconds remaining in the middle stanza as Alannah Kedra-McCormick scored to make it a 5-1 game after two.
The third period was evenly played and shots were 8-5 for Alberta with the lone goal scored by the Pandas on back-up goalkeeper Hillary Talbot for a 6-1 lead for the visiting U of A.
They managed to skate away with the victory on this night completing the double-header sweep of the Thunderbirds who fell to 4-9-1 on the season.
Next up for the “Birds” Women’s hockey team is the University of Calgary Dinos scheduled for the 14th and 15th.
Games are played at the Doug Mitchell Sports Centre on the UBC campus which is great for the local hockey scene as they feature one of the greatest players in Women’s history.
Haley Wickenheiser comes to town and the crowds should out in numbers for these two games.
Both games are 7:00pm faceoff times.
