U-17 World Cups

When it comes to the youth International Football, there are very few programs match what Mexico offers to the youth of today.

Mexico has two FIFA U-17 World Cups titles as well as being the runner-up two years ago.

While playing a match in Honduras the Canadian squad was at least equal to the Mexican U-17 team and if they were luck to get a few breaks Canada could have quite possibly pulled out a victory, but had to settle on a 1-1 draw.

Canada fell to an early goal at the 20 minute mark off the foot of Ulises Torres but fought hard to come back and get it even.

Sean FlemingHead Coach Sean Fleming mentioned “I don’t think this team will get their heads down but I don’t like the situation we’re always putting ourselves in, having to come back from behind.”.

He continued “But we’ve told our kids over and over, things aren’t always going to go the way we want them to go and we have to be able to react.”

Canada is a win away from the playoff round that will eventually determine if they go to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

This will be held later this year (2015) in Chile but there still is a chance at top spot in Group B.

Taking advantage of this could give them an automatic qualification as well as a chance to play for the CONCACAF U-17 Championship.Concaffcup

In order for that to happen, Canada has to win out and hope that Mexico can drop points in either of their last two games or score plenty of goals.

At present Mexico holds the tiebreaker, but having a better goal difference only if the teams remain level on points at the end.

Canada understands that for this to happen they have to make it to the playoff round and will need the additional “grit” to pull it off.

Fleming stated “We know as this long journey goes on, that you have to get better in each game, and that’s going to be our focus now as we go onto our next opponent.”

Canada takes on St. Lucia on Monday and wrap up Group B play later in the week (Thursday) as they face Panama.
