Tribute To Orangeville Northmen Lacrosse

Published on

It may have taken a long time, but the Orangeville Council made it official that they will immortalize the late Terry Sanderson for his contributions to all local sports.

A proposal was made to set aside $6,500 for the creation and installation of a tree sculpture in honour of Mr. Sanderson.

Sanderson who passed away in November 2014 is the founding father of the Orangeville Northmen lacrosse organization.

In addition he followed his career and well as one of the most successful players, coaches, and executives ever to leave his mark on the game.

It took some doing, but after much consideration the committee was decisive to allocate $7,500 for a memorial, which includes a plaque.

The Council showed no disagreement about paying tribute to him, but being realistic a tree sculpture seemed to be just a “tree”.

Jeremy Williams the Mayor of Orangeville mentioned “for somebody of Mr. Sanderson’s prominence in the community, he clearly deserves something better than a tree sculpture.”

The mayor mentioned that the committee put aside the proposed $6,500 and put toward matching any funds are raised within the community.

Sanderson’s Family is naturally excited about the (prospect) tree sculpture and when finished it will be situated near the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre’s entrance.

They are hoping the memorial will be in place in time for the 2016 Founder’s Cup National Lacrosse Championships held in August in Orangeville.

The committee’s chairperson Councillor Nick Garisto mentioned that the plaque should be installed in town, but Deputy Mayor Warren Maycock mentioned the idea of installing such a plaque inside the Tony Rose.

Councillor Sylvia Bradley mentioned that one of the outdoor fields near Orangeville District Secondary School also carry Mr. Sanderson’s name.

Another idea was to name Tony Rose’s Rink A after the Northmen founder, but it’s interesting to see that the plaque will “greet people as they come from the parking lot to the entrance of Tony Rose,” Kidd stated.

Long overdue for such a well respected Gentleman who gave so much of his time to sport in the community.
