Three-way Tie

Alix Kong , Naomi Ko and Hannah Lee sit in a three-way tie for first at the British Columbia Golf Junior Girls’ Championship at The Dunes at Kamloops after shooting an impressive 4-under-par 69 during the first round of competition.

17-year-old West Vancouver resident, Kong, finds herself in a familiar position after opening the 2013 in a similar fashion, she shared the lead with last year’s winner, Jamie Oleksiew after day one.

Kong, last year’s runner-up, bogeyed twice on Tuesday on a pair of par 4’s but shot two impactful eagles on the back nine (number 11 and number 18) to pull her ahead of the competition.

Team Canada member, Ko, of Victoria, had an incredible day highlighted by five birdies with only a single bogey on number two blemishing her scorecard. Ko, 16, finished third in the 2013 Junior Girls’ Championship.

Lee, another 2013 top 10-finisher is back at the top of the leaderboard again this year.

The Fraser Valley Zone 3 golfer had a number of ups and downs throughout the day, but ultimately closed out round one with an incredible eight birdies.

The leaders have very little breathing room, however, as three additional competitors finished under par and within reach of the top spot.

Cecile Kwon sits solo in fourth place after shooting a three-under-par 70 with four birdies in her first round.

Kathy Lim of Langley sits one stroke back of Kwon rounding out the top five. Lim closed out the day with a birdie on 17 and an eagle on number 18 to give her a one-stroke edge on Michelle Kim, in sixth at -1.

After one day of competition it appears the title is anyone’s to win and it will be a close-fought competition.
