Surrey’s Atkinson Nails RBI Triple

Surrey’s Justin Atkinson hammers a RBI triple (7th inning) and later scored the winning run as Junior National Team defeated the extended Spring Training club of the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3.

With the win, the Juniors record their first victory of the Spring Training Camp.

Ladner’s Tom Robson got made his second start at camp and gave up one run in the 1st inning. After a leadoff single, an error allowed the runner to advance to third base and later score on a sac-fly.

The Jays added to their lead in the 3rd when the leadoff batter singled, stole second and third base and scored on another sacrifice-fly.

Robson threw three innings, giving up the two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out four batters.

The JNT answered back in the top of the 4th, plating two runs to tie the score. After Jordan Procyshen and Kyle Hann walked, Damion Smith doubled to score Procyshen.

With Hann standing on third base after the double, Justin Atkinson hit a sac-fly to score Hann with the tying run.

Skylar Janisse had a near flawless performance on the mound as he took over from Robson to start the 4th inning.

Janisse worked three innings and struck out a game high five batters while giving up only one walk.

With the game knotted at two in the 7th, the Juniors took the lead when Smith scored from third base on Atkinson’s one out triple. Smith had previously been hit by a pitch and ended up on third base because of an error.

Atkinson scored from third as Cory Scammell continued to swing a hot stick and singled Atkinson home.

The Jays got one run back in the bottom of the inning when an error, two consecutive singles and a fielder’s choice scored the run. Jesen Dygestile-Therrien started the inning and benefitted from a runner being thrown out at second base with another runner on third to end the inning.

Therrien tossed a scoreless 8th inning including a strikeout which was his second of the game.
Andrew Marra came on for the save in the 9th and quickly gave up a leadoff single.

The runner advanced to second on a ground-out and then reached third base when Marra unloaded a wild-pitch with one out. Marra bared-down and struck out the next batter and managed another ground out for the final out.

The Spring Training Camp schedule continues as the Juniors take on the Washington National at 1pm (ET) in Orlando.
