The season started off with Head Coach Ray Moon off on a reality show with his Daughter, which kept him away from the turf for a while, but he was able along to work magic with his team.
The reality show which is scheduled to air in the spring and was called (at present) Game of Homes that took him away from the team for a five week period.
They were allowed one call per week, so one can assume that his (Ray’s) was to one of his Assistant Coaches to inquire about his team of upstarts that were moved up to a different level of play this year.
Why – all due to with them being unranked at the start of the season as in late August they were moved up from Double A to the Triple A tier and this was a level that they had not played since 1986m, since bowing out to the Kamloops Red Devils.
Mt. “Doug” Rams, as they are known or the dynasty from Victoria were looking to win their fourth straight Provincial Football Championship and were expected to dominate the Sun Devils in all areas of the field.
That’s why you play the game, to see who is the better team at season’s end and South Delta’s (11-1) Lucas Kirk shocked the Rams 55-30, which is B.C.’s highest scoring Senior Varsity Championship final.
The victory was not only sweet, but also avenged their only loss of the season by this powerhouse (undefeated) Rams team (11-1), which was their lone setback all season.
Following the win QB Kirk told the media “Our Head Coach (Ray Moon) told us at the half that it wasn’t over and that we needed to go back out there and finish it off.”
Truer words were never spoken as Kirk finished the night by managing 23-of-37 for 342 yards and six TD’s capturing the title and all Kirk could say was “I am so proud of my teammates and I really want to do it for (Moon).”
The Sun Devils took a 26-10 lead on a two-yard run on fourth down by Grant McDonald and on its next drive, Mt. Douglas fumbled a snap, giving South Delta the ball at it own 34-yard line with 2:33 left in the first half.
Prior to the before the break at the half, Kirk hit Jack McDonald on a slant, and he marched it for 37 yards, taking a 33-10 lead.
The Sun Devils entered the game as the underdogs, but everyone from Delta knew they could pull this off and capture the title.
At the end of one, South Delta led 20-10 and Kirk hit Thomas Franklin for a 53-yard strike, followed by one to Grant McDonald on a 22-yard pass. Connors managed to add another major for an 81-yard kickoff return.
Mt. Douglas’ first-half points came from Michael Olson’s 29-yard FG, plus a 10-yard run by Seye Farinu, while Joe Clarke (QB) passed for 211 yards and three scores.
Mt. Douglas was unable to convert three fourth-down attempts and lost the turnover battle 4-1 which is something they have failed to do all season long.
The Sun Devils captured the provincial AAA Championship with a dominating 55-30 win over the three-time defending Champion Mt Douglas Rams.
Interesting to note that this was the program’s third BC title and first-ever in the sport’s highest tier of high school football.
Congrats to the team on the win and Sportswave wishes them all the best in the years to come.
