Victoria Vikes’ Cameron Stokes and UFV Cascades’ Carley Radomski were named the Canada West 1^st Stars of the Week for their performance playing in the Canada West soccer playoffs.

Stokes scored twice against the Cascades, including the game-winner during injury time to book the Vikes’ ticket to the Canada West Men’s Soccer Final Four at Saskatchewan.

Radomski scored twice to lead the Cascades women’s to a 3-0 road win over Victoria that will now see UFV play Alberta in Women’s Soccer Final Four to be held at Trinity Western.

MEN.

1^st Star: #11, Cameron Stokes, Victoria (Soccer)

The University of Victoria Vikes Men’s soccer team advanced to the Final Four following a two-goal performance from fifth-year Cameron Stokes.

The home side went up in the 34^th minute when Tarnvir Bhandal threaded a pass through to Stokes up the left side that beat keeper Mark Village giving Stokes his’ ninth goal of the season. The Cascades tied it up right before half time

In added time Stokes got a Paulo Dait cross to head the ball for a 2-1 victory in the Canada West quarterfinal and the win sends the Vikes to the Final Four where they face Saskatchewan.

A win puts the Vikes in the conference final and guarantees them a berth at the CIS National Championship that will be hosted at UPEI November 6-9.

2^nd Star: #12, Ryley Barnes, Alberta (Volleyball)

One week after earning the Canada West 1^st Star of the Week, fourth-year U of A Golden Bears Volleyball Ryley Barnes is again on the honour list following his performance over the weekend.

Barnes from St. Paul picked up 48 kills including two aces, 19 digs, four blocks and a .240 attack percentage despite playing out of position.

He spent the entire weekend playing right-side against Trinity allowing (#1) Alberta to go  back-to-back wins, keeping Alberta undefeated on the season.

Over his last four matches (15 sets), Barnes has banked 77 kills, including his 500^th career conference kill, five aces and 29 digs, and he now leads the country in kills (95) and points (109.5).

In the rematch Barnes crushed 22 kills to lift the Bears to a 3-1 win and picked up an ace, eight digs and one block.

The Golden Bears will play the Calgary Dinos, in Calgary, over the October 31^st-November 1^st.

3^rd Star: #8 Mac McNicol, UBC (Volleyball)

Mac McNicol knocked down 36 kills over two games to lead the UBC Thunderbirds to a pair of comeback victories over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in Kamloops, B.C., on the weekend.

The third-year outside hitter from Calgary got 20 kills in Friday’s win by UBC, including nine in the last two sets as the T-Birds rallied from a 2-1 deficit. He also had eight digs and three block assists. McNicol ended the match with 21.5 points.

In Saturday’s 3-2 victory, McNicol recorded 16 kills, two solo blocks and four block assists to total 20 points. He helped the Thunderbirds win three straight sets after they fell behind 2-0. McNicol’s solo block on Casey Knight ended the fourth set and his final kill of the night clinched the fifth set and the UBC win.

McNicol, an Applied Science student, now sits eighth in the Canada West with a .304 hitting percentage.

WOMEN.

1^st Star: #11 Carley Radomski, UFV (Soccer)

Carley Radomski supplied the finishing touch to spark the University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team to a playoff upset on the road.

The second-year midfielder from Langley scored twice to lead the Cascades to a 3-0 victory over the CIS No. 5-ranked Victoria Vikes in the Canada West quarterfinals on Saturday.

Playing at UVic’s Centennial Stadium, Radomski scored in the 37^th and 57^th minutes, both times picking the bottom corner on strikes from the top of the box.

 2^nd Star: #10 Katy Klomps, UBC Okanagan (Volleyball)

In UBC Okanagan’s two women’s volleyball wins Katy Klomps scored 12 points on the weekend to slow down the (defending) CIS National Champion Manitoba Bisons with 3-1 and 3-0 victories.

Both nights she scored 12 points and on both nights, with Katy in the middle they were able to slow downRachel Cockrell, holding her to under five a set, being the first team to do so in 2014.

UBC Okanagan, who have twice defeated the #1 team in the country and have beaten the defending champs twice, will play the UBC Thunderbirds, the 2013-14 Canada West Champions.

3^rd Star: #1 Samantha Langford, UBC (Hockey)

Goaltender Samantha Langford continued her impressive fourth season with the UBC Thunderbirds, helping her team earn four points on the weekend against the University of Regina Cougars.

She stopped 29 of 32 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss on Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

The Pense, Sask., native followed that performance up with a 30-save shutout of the Cougars on Saturday night. She was especially clutch in the third period, as Regina outshot UBC 14-5.

Langford, a Kinesiology student, now owns three shutouts on the season, good enough for second in the Canada West. She’s also second in save percentage (.956) and third in goals against average (1.12). Her record is a stellar 5-1-1.
