Having a strong community means giving back which is what the Sockeyes are made of especially with today’s youth.
It’s not just about having young players both boys and girls, attend the game but having them have a true experience interacting with the team both before, during and after the game.
That alone is more valuable than just a between period minor game which they thoroughly enjoy. It’s extended to an interview with the players after the first period to introduce today’s youth.
With the stands full the Sockeyes were playing their “Tunnel Series” rivals the Delta Ice Hawks which wasn’t just entertaining it featured a fast aggressive first period that featured the teams trading seven goals.
While the game started fast, Delta jumped out to an early 1-0 lead a short 1:04 that saw the Sockeyes Captain Teo Lin collect his 28th of the season a short 20 seconds later.
Delta on the other hand wasn’t finished as they managed a pair in a contest that saw the Sockeyes reply with a pair of their own from Keilmann and MacIntyre on the power play.
Delta responded finishing the first taking a 4-3 lead to the dressing room after one in a period that saw them chase Mathias Hasselman from the crease that saw Max Fowle take over at the 16:46 mark.
The first saw Delta manage four penalties while the Sockeyes had a pair in a period that saw Delta outshoot the home squad by a 19-13 margin after twenty minutes.
The second was more disciplined in a period that saw the teams two minor’s while the teams trade only one that saw solid “tending” at each end of the rink.
The Sockeyes outshot Delta in the second by a narrow 10-8 margin and 12-5 in the third with the final shots in favour of the home squad by a 35-32 margin.
Despite the narrow 5-4 loss the Sockeyes played as a unit but came up short only in the goal department but continued to win the hearts of their solid fan base on a regular basis.
The Monday prior to the above game was the reinvented PJHL All-Star game which was hosted by the Trailblazers that saw the Sockeyes send five to the game.
They included Mathias Hasselman (goal), Teo Lin, Michael MacIntyre and Nicholas Noren, Mattias Uyeda as well as Coach Cullen Revel and Will Kump Director of Operations for the Sockeyes.
This game featured various all-stars from the league teams that saw the game tied at five after sixty minutes heading to overtime.
While some went for coffee they missed the O/T game winning goal by the Tom Shaw Conference giving them a 6-5 win to the delight of both fans and parents taking in the game.
As the regular season draws to a conclusion the Sockeyes have five home and away games prior to the playoffs which they have clinched top spot fighting neck and neck with Delta.
The Sockeyes hosted their annual Alumni game in a contest that saw fast paced end to end action in a game that saw the Alumni manage a win.
In addition the Sockeyes continue to get involved with several community events with the most recent being helping at the Minoru Centre for Active Living , 7191 Granville Ave Richmond, BC
