With golf being so prevalent in the area and most are allowed to play year round, it’s only fitting that Clubs would want to express an interest in hosting various upcoming events.

Such is the case with the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club as we are hearing that they are set to “T” off on making a pitch in hopes of bring the Presidents Cup to Vancouver.

Shaughnessy GM Jason Sigurdson sent a note to all members that stated “Recently the Club has been asked to participate in a bid process which could see Shaughnessy host the Presidents Cup in 2023.”

He continued “We are in the preliminary steps of this process and are working closely with Golf Canada to fully research the extent of the opportunity. We expect that once we have more information, the Membership will be advised and all aspects of the opportunity can be discussed as we have done in the past when the club has considered hosting major golf events.”

Earlier in the week he (Sigurdson) mentioned “Shaughnessy has been working in conjunction with Golf Canada and its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Laurence Applebaum on a potential Presidents Cup bid and this is something they asked us to take a look at and I would say we are cautiously excited about the opportunity,”

Shaughnessy is a private club located on Southwest Marine Drive, played host to the Canadian Open in 2005 and 2011 and the course received positive reviews from players and the PGA Tour.

The Presidents Cup is somewhat larger than the Canadian Open and one question remains is could Shaughnessy convince the PGA Tour that it has the space to hold such an event?

Sigurdson mentioned “We have to have them come out and take a look and see if it is the right type of situation because it is so different than the Open.”

Knowing that it’s not an easy event to host it’s only understanding that cost is a major concern and no doubt they club would likely need support from both the Provincial and Federal governments to host the event.

Sigurdson is aware that this is a huge hurdle and while several questions remain currently unanswered they will have to re-assess the dollar value needed to even be considered.“

The Presidents Cup made its debut in 1994 and the biennial event features 12-man International (excluding Europe) and United States teams in match play competition.

Currently the Royal Montreal Golf Club is the only Canadian course to host a Presidents Cup in 2007.

If you remember and many might this is where many remember watching Ontario’s Mike Weir defeat Tiger Woods in the singles match.

Recently we saw Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin play his first Presidents Cup at the Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey and while he never won, he at least competed.

Odd-numbered years will see the 2019 Presidents Cup return for the third time to Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia.

Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte North Carolina hosts the 2021 event while the 2025 event is held at Harding Park in San Francisco.

The 2023 site remains a mystery and as of yet is (TBA) to be determined.

We wish them all the best in their bid!!
