SFU Men’s Hockey

SFU’s Men’s hockey team fell 6-5 to Trinity Western on Friday night at the LEC in a shootout loss. They still have an outside chance at first place in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League as they sport a record of 15-4-0-2 in the 2012-13 season with two games remaining.

The first period saw 6 goals were scored by both teams, but had Trinity Western take an early 2-0 lead. Goals came off the sticks of Hirano and Harcoff.

By 6:16 of the game SFU tied the score at 2 on goals by Ceci and Sandor 46 seconds apart midway through the first. SFU took the lead 3-2 on a goal by Brendan Sylvester to give his club the as they went to the intermission shots were 16-12 for Simon Fraser.

The teams traded goals early in the second period as TWU tied the game 3-3 on a goal by Matthew Ius 2:44 in, Simon Fraser came back to take the lead 4-3  the game at 4-4 at 12:42 on the power play as kale Wild scored the go ahead goal.

Matthew Ius scored his second of the night tied the game 4-4, and Mattias Schmidt his second of the night put them up 5-4 the goals were scored 42 seconds apart as the they went to the final period. Trinity Western held a 13-3 edge in shots in the period.

The final period saw SFU score the lone goal from Milner at 11:54 but that was as close as they got, despite firing 18 shots at Fredeman of TWU.

He started but got pulled replacing him with Zwiers with 8:02 remaining in regulation time with the score deadlocked at 5. O/T failed to solve anything so both clubs went to a shootout.

Shots in the game were 40-38 for SFU. Kurylo (SFU) finished with 32 saves in the shootout loss. In the shootout the only one to score was Hirano as Zwiers stopped Milner, Sylvester, Pavone, Wild, Sandor, and Graf of SFU in the shootout.

Thus blanking them to give the TWU a 6-5 win. After tonight SFU have one game remaining (February 23rd) when they host Selkirk College a 7:00pm.

The team has fan appreciation night planned prior to the post season.
