SFU Hockey

The Simon Fraser University Men’s Hockey team is pleased to announce its fourth student athlete commitment for the 2015-16 season.

Joining SFU this September is Defenseman Dustin Cave (20) of Coquitlam who played more than 270 Junior Hockey games all split between the BCHL and AJHL.

“He is a solid in your face defenseman, that will go through you to get the puck out. He has years of Jr A experience and we are excited to have him on board.” said SFU Men’s Hockey Head Coach, Mark Coletta.
Cave, is listed at 5’11” and 201 lbs and was born in Tappen which is located outside of Salmon Arm.
His family moved to Cochrane Alberta where he continued his hockey development through to his final year of Midget in Strathmore.
Dustin began his Junior A career back in BC with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, before two seasons with the West Kelowna Warriors.
He then spend one and a half years in the AJHL split between Calgary and Sherwood Park before returning to the BCHL with the Coquitlam Express for the remainder of the 2014/15 season.
While the SFU defense core currently features players with a significant offensive upside, Cave will be counted on to play a shut down role.
His durability will also be an asset to the Clan as he averaged 54 games played per season during his 5 years of Junior Hockey.
Speaking on what to expect from him on the ice, Cave said: “I would describe myself as a physical defensive defenseman” which as echoed by Coletta: “Dustin will add some grit and a no nonsense attitude to our defense core, making us a very difficult team to play against”
” My personal goals for the upcoming season are to work hard, improve where I need to, and be the best I can be everyday—both on and off the ice. Getting in the lineup every game and doing what I do best to help the team win are my ultimate goals,” said Waddington.
Cave will be joining a defense core that will be returning only 3 players from the 2014/15 season.
“We are in a rebuilding year so to speak, especially on the back end. With the loss of four defensemen from last year’s roster, we knew we had some work to do.,” Coletta continued.
Cave joins Jamie Waddington, Robson Cramer and Darnel St. Pierre as the fourth recruit thus far in what is expected to be a very strong recruiting class for the 2015-16 season for SFU.
SFU Men’s Hockey was re-established in 2004 and competes in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League.
The program focuses on competition, academics, and community service as its core values.sfu
