The Trinity Western Spartans of the BCIHL ended the Simon Fraser Hockey teams championships hopes with a 4-1 win in the deciding game of the best of three semi-final to win their match up two games to one.
The teams split the games to force the third and deciding game of the series as JP Villeuve scored a hat trick in the deciding game and they outstanding goalkeeping from Silas Matthys a 40 save performance en-route to the Spartans win as they advance to meet the Selkirk Saints in the best of three championship next weekend up in Castlegar BC.
Trinity Western led 2-0 after the opening period on goals by JP Villeneuve his first two of the game the first coming at 11:48 on the power play a blast from the point past Andrew Parent of the Clan to give them a 1-0 lead.
Aafter that SFU picked up their game and started to throw around some solid hits and opened up holes in the Spartans defense but Silas Matthys and Spartans withstood the attacks to hold onto a the one goal lead the other Spartans goal was scored by Jamey Kreller.
Trinity Western University added to their lead before the period was over as JP Villeneuve scored his second of the night with 2:43 left in the period to extend the score to 2-0 for the visitors as the teams headed to the intermission shots in the first period were 15-9 for the Clan.
The second period was scoreless as the Clan dominated the Spartans as their defense blocking shots or goalkeeper Silas Matthys stood on his head to keep his team in the lead coming up with several huge stops to maintain the 2-0 lead over the Clan shots were 15-4 for SFU just an indication of the dominating period they had over two periods despite being down 2-0 they doubled the shots 29-13 against the Spartans going into the final period.
Trinity Western got the insurance goal from JP Villeneuve completed his hat trick 20 seconds into the final period making it 3-0 for the visitors from Trinity Western before the Clan.
They got on the scoreboard 5 minutes into the third period on the PP goal by Trevor Milner cutting the Spartans lead to 3-1 but back Trinity Western to put the nail in the coffin as JP Villeneuve scored his hat trick goal to give the Spartans an insurmountable 4-1 lead as they shut down the Clan the rest of the way to record the win shots in the third were 12-4 for SFU and 41-17 in the game as goalkeeper Silas Matthys closed the door on the Clans season.
The finals will between the Selkirk Saints from Castlegar and the Trinity Western Spartans for the 2013-14 BCIHL championship next weekend (Friday Saturday and Sunday) as Selkirk knocked off Thompson Rivers to advance to the finals in their best of three semi-final.
