The Okanagan Rockets captured their second BC Major Midget League Championship with a 4-3 series clinching win against the Vancouver North West Giants. The Rockets won the best-of-three Championship series 2-0. The Championship series was played at the Burnaby Winter Club.
The opening game of the Major Midget League Championship was exiting to start the roll for a successful season for the Rockets, who ended up 2-1 on the score sheet.
Tanner Browne scored the game winning goal in the second for the Rockets on the PP, which saw Rockets “tender” Brendan Barry play exceptional in the final period to preserve the one (1) goal win.
Game two of the series was almost similar to the first, with each team taking turns with scoring chances and end to end rushes, with stellar goaltending at both ends.
Heading into the third period tied at three (3), Jake Kryski scored a breakaway goal with a beautiful shot. The Giants pushed hard, but were unable to tie the game. The loss snapped the Giants five (5) year reign as BC Major Midget League Champions.
The Rockets will now wait to see who they will play from the Alberta Midget AAA League. The Championship series is currently underway with Red Deer Chiefs taking on the Lloydminster Bobcats.
The Rockets the next leg of the Championship, which is the 2014 Pacific Midget Regional Championship played April 4-6 to be played in Alberta.
The BC Hockey Major Midget League was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group.
The teams at this level of hockey have an opportunity each year to compete for the National Midget Championship, which cap’s off the title for a banner season.
Game time and location for the Championship series will be announced at a later date, once all is confirmed by Hockey Canada.
