The roof was open, the sun was shinning and everyone was in a great mood, at least at the start of the match.
The Whitecaps had their sights set on moving up in the Western play-off race to see if there was any glimmer of hope.
The Whitecaps had numerous chances, but were simply unable to capitalize, at times narrowly missing the outside post on either side of the net.
From the press box the match (at times) proved to be “testy” with both sides taking liberties near or away from the ball, but this would soon be dealt with by the man in charge.
With the tempers fairing and players getting ever so frustrated by either lack of or over call by the game referee, it wasn’t long until Whitecaps bench boss Carl Robinson was sent off for “who knows what”?
Regardless, he was ejected and left the pitch in front of a sell-out crowd of 22,120 on lookers, who were as puzzled as Carl was.
We are hearing that in the 18th and 42nd minute he (Carl) was warned after verbally dissented and visually gestured his frustration at the referee’s call or lack of.
We are hearing that he continued this concern from the technical area in front of the bench and was thereby ejected from the match.
It’s reported that Red Nation Online checked this situation out and found out the ejection was for “Acting in an irresponsible manner”, whatever that is.
God knows you see players playing this sport that you would think take acting class for the next leading role in Hollywood for a sequel of “Gone with the Wind”.
For whatever reason of late the Whitecaps have been unable to find the back of the net as well as any real amount of sustained pressure from various areas on the pitch.
Reportedly the fans are not only frustrated, they are concerned as is Carl and question if changes are in the future for some of the players.
One of the best chances for the “Cap’s” came from a long ball from Ousted who sent one to Techera, but he was simply unable to recover the long pass for any attempted shot on or at the goal.
It did seem that the Whitecaps had more quality chances than the Red Bulls, but chances don’t put points in the standings.
Hurtado had chances, but eventually it was the Red Bulls Bradley Wright-Phillips who opened the scoring in the 50th minute, which put him into a tie for first in the MLS with goals (17) this season.
The Whitecaps eventually moved three defenders to the back along with bringing in substitutions in the 79th minute.
Davies and Kudo entered the game replacing Techera and Smith, but event this was too little to late.
Following the match the normal press event was held and interesting enough Red Bulls Coach Jesse Marsch thought his team was outplayed in the first half but then found a way to scrape out the victory in the second half.
Coach Robinson was not pleased with the loss and stated that he thought they might have deserved to win but did not. They now have a large hill to climb to make the playoffs.
While the Whitecaps came up short on the pitch they did win the hearts and support of the fans as they brought in young children from the Children Hospital.
Whitecaps’ super fans from the BC Children’s Hospital were invited to the match/game and it was great to see them at the game.
All of the children who attended have a form of Cancer and showing professionalism it was great to see both teams wearing black Children’s Hospital T shirts supporting the cause.
The young children were on the pitch (field) prior to the game, er-match and for some it was their first ever Whitecaps match.
Touch of class!!
