On a soggy night on Canada’s west coast the Vancouver Giants (28-25-3-5) welcome the Red Deer Rebels (20-28-1-2) back to the confines of the Coliseum in hopes of moving up in the standings.
Both teams have a coach on the bench that have NHL experience behind them and watching them interact with the players is not only interesting, it shows the dedication and passion they exude in wanting the players to excel beyond Major Junior Hockey.
The Rebels on the PP have managed 36 goals on 194 opportunities for a 18.6%, while on the PK, they have 26 goals on 186 opportunities for an 86.0 %
The Giants on the speciality teams are ranked 8th with 44 PP goals for, 8 short handed goals against for a 22.2 % on198 opportunities.
On the PK the Giants are ranked 18th with 52 PP Goals Against, 5 short handed goals on 219 opportunities for a 76.3%.
So the stats speak for themselves and the key for pulling off a win is playing tough, disciplined and playing a full sixty minutes, with no time off.
This game marks the final meeting of the season between both clubs and the Rebels are 1-0-0-0 going against the Giants this season following a 5-3 win in Alberta January 24th in snowy Red Deer.
Rebel’s Adam Musil played in the CHL Top Prospects game in St. Catherines in January and the NHL Central Scouting (mid-term) have him ranked 32nd in North America.
This game saw Adam Musil play exceptional hockey, but regardless of how he played his squad dropped a 5-3 decision to the Giants while on the PK for kneeing.
It was ironic the major penalty was assessed for kneeing Ronning, and twice as interesting that it was Ronning who got the game winner for the Giants.
The Rebels visit Victoria, then return home the 13th, while the Giants face-off against Seattle for a road game Saturday, then play Seattle on Monday afternoon at the Coliseum.
Game time on Monday is 2 pm and also Family Day in British Columbia.
