NHL Ironman Heads To Canucks

Looking from the outside in one had to ask who the Canucks would get to work the bench with Willie.

The search was on and rumour was that they were also in conversation with Dave Lowry the current bench boss for the Victoria Royals of the WHL.

We now know that the long search is over as Canucks GM Jim Benning officially announced Doug Jarvis as the teams

new Assistant Coach.

Jarvis joins Head Coach Willie Desjardins’ as well as Assistant Coaches Doug Lidster and Perry Pearn, Dan Cloutier (Goaltending Coach), Skills Coach Glen Carnegie and the teams Video Coach, Ben Cooper.

Benning told the media “Doug Jarvis is an accomplished coach with multiple Stanley Cup championships and NHL Finals experience.”

He continued “He has a teaching mentality and draws from his knowledge as a former player and coach spanning almost 40 years. We are very pleased to have Doug and his family join our team.”

Jarvis’s who hails from Brantford is a six-time Stanley Cup Champion and has a career that extends over 26 years which follows an exceptional 13-year playing career.

He has won four times as a player with Montreal and twice as an Assistant Coach with Dallas (1999) and Boston (2011).

UngerHe currently holds the NHL iron man record with 964 consecutive games played overtaking Garry Unger who played in 914 consecutive games in the regular season while playing with four teams.

He recorded 403 career points (139-264-403) with Montreal, Washington and Hartford and won the Selke Trophy (top defensive forward) in 1984 and the Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication in 1987.

When he hung up his skates as a player he was named Assistant Coach with the Minnesota North Stars in 1989, where he spent 14 seasons and moved with the club to Dallas.

In 2003 he was named Head Coaching with the Hamilton Bulldogs (Montreal’s AHL affiliate) and named associate coach with Montreal in 2005 following two season’s in Hamilton.

In 2010 he joined the Bruins coaching staff spending the past six seasons.

It’s obvious that the Canucks are focused on developing the youth into better skilled and talented players to one day make the parent team.

Sportswave congratulations Doug on his new role!
