If you’re not into watching the World Juniors you can always turn your attention to catching some exciting Curling which is taking place in Liverpool Nova Scotia.
While it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, you’ll be happy to know that Team Canada Olympians managed to secure a place for Milano-Cortina 2026.
Well it sounds easy enough but that’s not the finish either as they will have to qualify for Canada at that spot at the upcoming World Mixed Doubles Championship.
Locally the Delta Thistle Curling Club is hosting their Mad Hatter Bonspiel for the club that started in 1972 that first started with a sand-base floor and in the mid-nineties the Corporation (now City of Delta) installed a cement base floor.
Since then they have undergone various changes all for the better and most recently in 2022 the club celebrated their 50th Anniversary which was hosted by Jordan Armstrong who grew up in North Delta.
He (years back) played hockey at the North Delta Rec Centre where the club is located and in recent conversation enjoys coming back to Delta if for nothing else to visit friends.
The Husband and Wife team of Jocelyn Peterman and Brent Gallant managed to pull off an 8-7 win over Rachel Homan and Brendan Bottcher capturing the Canadian mixed doubles curling trials which was held in Liverpool N.S. at Queens Place Emera Centre.
The win sees them finish with a solid 10 straight wins at the competition, so clearly practice doesn’t take any time off.
So one might think that a rest is in the cards for the pair, but winning doesn’t take time off as they prepare for the World Championship from April 26th- May3 in Fredericton, which acts as the main qualifier for the Milan Games.
Following the win Peterman told the media “We’ve dreamt of this for a long time,” said Peterman. “In a sense it feels like it’s kind of the first step. We know we still have to earn that spot in a few months, but yeah it’s amazing.”
Jocelyn continued “We had some really, really close games early and we were very determined this week,” Peterman said. “Just very proud of the week as a whole.”
From an earlier conversation with a friend who took the event in he mentioned “It was the match to watch with my Son and now he’s eager to take up the sport”.
Streaming for the Trials will be available on Curling Canada’s YouTube channel.
