The 2014 Minto Cup Championship hit’s the hardwood (er-carpet) at the Langley Event’s Centre in a best of seven series to see who will be crowned with Junior A supremacy in Canada.
This is the first time in the history of the Championship the event will be played at the Events Centre and for those familiar with the series you have seen it played in various arena’s in the lower mainland in the past.
The series will feature two of the more synonymous teams in Canada, seeing BC favorite Coquitlam Adanacs against Six Nations a club situated just outside Hamilton.
Six Nations enters the tournament after defeating last year’s champion ship team, Whitby Warriors in four straight games outscoring them 44-22, so fire power is something the Adanac’s should watch.
The Eastern Champ’s play a 20 game schedule and through 20 games they pulled off 16 wins managing only 4 losses for 32 points, two ahead of Brampton.
Coquitlam finished the season second to New West, playing 21 games with 17 win’s, 3 losses and 1 tie for 35 points through 21 games with a win % of .814.
Goals for Coquitlam saw them score 264 allowing 148 with 170 PIM’s while Six Nations scored 231 goals allowing 131 for a win % of .800
Both teams have met once before in the Minto Cup final when Six Nations defeated Coquitlam in the seventh and deciding game to win their first ever Minto Cup title in 1992.
Six Nations last Cup appearance was in 2007 when the defeated the Burnaby Lakers giving them only their second championship in the history of the franchise.
This is the seventh Minto Cup appearance for the Adanac’s and in their last appearance (2010) they defeated the Orangeville Northmen wining their first and only Minto Cup Championship.
The Adanac’s enter this series and it all started with a sweep over the Shamrocks in the BCJLL semi-finals, then their path was blocked by the “hot” New Westminster Salmonbellies, who swept the Delta Islanders in three games.
The best of seven series against the Bellies that went the distance of seven games and in the end they pulled the win to grab their sixth straight BC Junior A Championship.
The following series saw them play the Calgary Mountaineers in four games to advance to the Minto Cup, so that set’s up an impressive final championship.
Congratulations to both teams for making this final Championship series and make plans on attending this event.
As the song goes “WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE”
