It takes more than a special pair of shoes to make a statement in sports and one such individual is Charlie Kain with the BC Special Olympics.
If you talk to him, he might seem shy and feel as though he is lacking some social skills, but in reality he’s an all rounded individual who just wants to compete.
His sport of choice is playing on the Grand Forks floor hockey team and while the team was without a coach for a time, Charlie convinced Derek Taylor to help out.
Both Taylor and Kain have known each other since high school and Charlie says “his coach is like a brother to him and one of his best friends.
Once Taylor began to coach he was hooked as he know coaches multiple sports with the Special Olympics of BC and also acts as the local program coordinator for the area.
Travel is one thing, but Taylor was the team coach for the floor hockey team at the 2016 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook Newfoundland and Labrador.
Kain mentions that “competing in Corner Brook was a lot of fun and it gave him opportunities to meet new people and besides I made some pretty good friends out of the deal and it was amazing!”
For his part Taylor is always willing to help out and currently helping Kain modify or fix-up a Chevrolet Cavalier that he helped him save his money to buy.
Kain’s involvement helps him work at the Border Bruins hockey team, which he has been doing for the past 16 years and in his time away from the rink, he works in a restaurant preparing food and doing dishes to help ownership.
While he has come close to qualifying for the Special Olympics World Games on occasions, his goal or dream is to compete as a member of the Special Olympics Team Canada and qualify for the World Games in floor ball.
Personally, I have assisted the Delta Special Olympics and there is nothing more gratifying that helping out this organization.
