Playing Minor Hockey in the lower mainland or the Canucks back-yard is great for the National Winter Sport.
Given the numbers or lack of in some Associations, why is it that some Associations continue to grow and prosper.
Local product from North Vancouver is Martin Jones who is a young 21 year-old grew up playing minor hockey in North Van.
Harvey his Father is the VP of Arena Operations with the Canucks, where the towers are being constructed.
His Dad played junior hockey in Trail, but now play’s 60+ in North Van, still enjoys the game. Like most Fathers, he is extremely proud of his young Son.
He has a brother Jordan and sister Jocelyn. He played in the BC Major Midget hockey league with the Vancouver Northwest Giants.
Martin did have the luxury of practicing with the Kings during their Stanley Cup run in 2010, so learned a lot from the pro’s.
Martin is (till now) playing in the AHL with the Manchester Monarchs, but is with the Kings while Jonathan Quick is on the mend.
He was selected in the fourth round of the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft and joined the Hitmen in 06-07 but played as Dan Spence’s backup for two seasons.
He was eligible for the 08 Draft, but went undrafted. He was offered a try-out with the Kings and was impressive at the main camp.
The Kings team signed him to a three-year contract, prior to sending him back to the Hitmenand played strong enough to get the role as Calgary’s starting goaltender in 08-09. he broke the team record of 39 wins managing to grab 45 wins to impress the King’s brass.
He led the league (wins), tied for the lead with 7 S/O’s and finished third in G/AA of 2.08.
The Hitmen had 12 consecutive wins in the playoffs, tying a league record, prior to getting beat out by the WHL championship series in six games against the Rockets.
He was invited to participate in the Canadian Junior Team’s summer camp, and was named as the backup to Jake Allen for the 2010 World Junior Ice Hockey.
To play in front of his Family at the Rogers arena is a dream come true for Martin.
